Here's Matthew's interview in full

Matthew, a warm welcome to Stunning Men and many thanks for taking the time to do the interview.
Could we start off with talking a little about yourself and your background?
Sure no problems. I was brought up in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. I was always into music at a young age and started playing the violin when I was four. Later on I taught myself to play a variety of other instruments so music has always been a big part of my life. I finished school and did an apprenticeship which never really satisfied me, I still found myself looking for more. At that time I was right into hitting the gym so I made the decision to quit my job and go do a personal training course. I loved every moment of it! I have now been a personal trainer for 4 years at Macleod YMCA. I teach group fitness, school groups and I coach gymnastics which is another passion of mine. I love helping people get results and the friendships you make along the way

You speak Czech and Japanese; how did this come about?
(Matthew laughs) This is a funny question; I learnt Japanese in primary school and high school and can still speak quite a bit of it. I always wanted to go to Japan as a kid and train with all the great karate teachers as I used to practise karate during my youth. As for the Czech, my grandfather is from Czechoslovakia so I only ever picked up a couple of words here and there.

How did you get into modelling? Is it something you always wanted to do?
For me I kind of just fell into it, I was told by a few people years ago that I should go get some shots done but never really thought much into it. Earlier this year I had one of those moments were you think to yourself ... ”what have you got to lose?”
There was an ad looking for new models from CSA so I sent off an email introducing myself. I think it was two days later Chrystofa had emailed me back asking me to call him asap. From there I have been getting a bit of attention and booking work which has been fantastic and a great experience.

What do you enjoy the most about it?
I love being in front of the camera and recently have found a great appreciation for the artistry and hard work that goes into creating beautiful shots; so it’s great to be a part and help create that.

How was your shoot with Japs Rodriguez?
The shoot with Japs was great, I was new to it all so was a little nervous to start with but he made me feel comfortable and gave me a few pointers as to how to hold my body so it complements the light. It was harder then I thought to be honest but after that first shoot I was hooked and avidly awaiting the next

Was this your first shoot?
It sure was!

How do you prepare before a photoshoot?/ How did you prepare for this shoot?
Usually I don’t do too much to prepare but I do love to hit the gym in the morning to get the blood pumping. My shoot with Japs as it was my first shoot I had a little more preparation but I still started the day with a tall Latte and a massive gym session!

Are you interested in doing runway work?
Absolutely! I think this is a goal of mine for the next twelve months.

What’s the best advice you were given about modelling, if any?
Don’t take yourself too seriously and just have fun!

Do you consider yourself a fashionista? And what do you like wearing when you are not working as a model?
I’ve always cared about how I dress and tend to lean more towards brands even though my wallet doesn’t like it (Matt laughs) but as I work so much in the gym usually you will find me in gym clothes!
But on a weekend you will find me in a sexy pair of jeans topped off with a tee under a Marc Jacobs coat ... in winter of course. In summer less is best! Shorts and a singlet.

You have a great physique. How do you keep in shape and healthy? Do you do any sport?
To keep fit I train six times a week. That training usually consists of running, weights and gymnastics. I’m an avid Cross fit enthusiast too. I love high intensity training!

What are your top three favourite exercises at the gym?
I love Olympic lifting so my first favourite is the power clean. Second is the deadlift and third is push press. All these exercises target the body as a whole and are great for building strength and body conditioning.

What’s the best form of cardio for you?
I love to run! Running is the best form of cardio in my opinion that you can do. I tell clients if you want to change your body shape get into running.

How do you keep motivated?
I’m pretty goal orientated so once I set myself to a challenge I just go for it!
I draw my motivation from my constant need and want to be a better person both physically, emotionally and spiritually.

How do you approach a challenge?
Full steam ahead! I just jump right into it and tackle it head on.

Do you have any role models? People who inspire you?
I have to say being a trainer Paul Chek is up there for me. His view on overall wellbeing both physically and holistically is a definite winner and I practise a lot of his methods in my everyday life

Now a few quick fun questions if we may? Do you think you are a good date?
I think I’m a pretty good date (more laughter), I always open the door for the ladies and like to pay. Chivalry isn’t dead yet!

What do you do in your free time?
Sleep! (Matt laughs some more) Well when I do get some free time I like to train. One of my passions is surfing and rock climbing so I try to do that whenever I get a chance.

Are you a brief man or a boxer kinda guy?
Neither! I like those ones between briefs and boxers, small and not too tight with plenty of support! (Matt laughs again)

What do you listen to on your iPod?
I love electronic music so Deadmau5 is one I play a lot. Skrillex and Nero are also some of my favourite artists too.

Your favourite song/piece of music to play while running?
It’s a song by Deadmau5 called ‘Sofi Needs A Ladder’, I use it to get up those tough hills!

What kind of movies do you like?
I love Sci Fi and action movies, my fave is The Fifth Element with Bruce Willis.

What three words describe you best?

Cheeky, strong and loyal.

One last question Matthew, where do you see yourself and what would you like to be doing in 10 years time?

In ten years I hope to be running my own training business, personal training and practising physiotherapy!

Matthew, it has been a real pleasure to interview you! Thank you for your time and for being a good sport. Best of luck for the future!
