 Shayne's interview in full

Shayne, a warm welcome to Stunning Men and many thanks for taking the time to do the interview.
Thanks for considering me for the interview. I’m very flattered to be featured in your blog (Shayne gives us his gorgeous smile)

Could we start off with talking a little about yourself and your background? You live in Florida, USA, is that where you’re from?
Absolutely, I’m from Miami, FL and have lived here my whole life. However, I’m three quarters Colombian Mestizo and one quarter German and French.

Wow, that’s an interesting background! You are new to modelling; is it something you always wanted to do?
For a long while yes. I think it would be a great way to open doors for me to someday star in films or be on a television series which is something I would be more interested in doing for the long haul since beauty is fleeting and models don’t usually get to work past a certain age unless they look exceptionally well.

What do you enjoy the most about it?
I love the creative aspect of it and being able to see yourself in a whole new light. The photographer puts you through the filter of his imagination and it’s always interesting to see what he/she has in store. It can be quite a confidence booster as well.

How do you think fitness modelling compares to fashion modelling?
Well, the two obvious differences would have to be that fitness models are much more muscular and don’t exactly have to be the typical 6’2 rail thin types that you see gracing runways in Milan and such. They come in all height variations. Also, fashion models can be muscular but never too bulky.

How do you prepare before a photoshoot?
Lots of cardio, definitely! Stay away from junk food as well. The day of the shoot I also hit the steamroom and try not to drink any water so that the muscles will look a little more visible under the skin. I also don’t eat right before a shoot to look as lean as possible in front of the camera.

What’s the best advice you were given as a model?
I was told to never ever get into porn. Not that I would, but that’s just what I was told! (Shayne laughs out loud)

You have a great physique. How do you keep in shape and healthy? Do you do any sport?
Well, thanks (another great smile). I don’t do any sports but I do workout 6 days a week. Usually on my off days I just go to the gym to do abs and some light cardio. I always top it off with the steamroom and sauna at the end.

What are your top three favourite exercises?
I love doing chest flyes. Shoulder and calf exercises I really enjoy doing as well.

What’s the best form of cardio for you?
I never use the treadmill but always do cardio on the elliptical machine after my workouts since I heard somewhere that you burn more fat when doing it after a workout rather than before.

What’s your gym/training routine like?
I switch it up sometimes so my body doesn’t get used to the same old routine but at the moment I’ll do Chest/biceps/traps monday, tuesday is lower back/legs, and wednesday is back/triceps/shoulders. Thursday would be my break day and on Friday the process repeats. I do abs everyday at the beginning of my workouts so I won’t be too tired to do them afterwards. I also do 15-30 minutes of cardio after my workouts.

How do you keep motivated?
I look at guys in the gym who are still in highschool who have better bodies than me and I think to myself, “Well, if they can do it then I sure can.”

How do you fit training and fitness into your life? Is it a difficult thing to achieve?
It’s really not all that difficult if the will power is there. I always make time for the gym. The times I go vary though depending on my schedule for the day.

How do you approach a challenge?
I go at it full force.

What do you eat in a normal day?
I pretty much eat everything - not gonna lie. However, as of late I have cut back majorly on junk food and unnecessary sugar and have since gotten leaner and am continuing to lean out even more so.

What do you do in your down time?
Just hang with friends. Maybe hit up clubs or go to the beach. I also enjoy reading a good book and brushing up on my Japanese.

Wow! Japanese?! ... Do you have any role models? People who inspire you?
I would have to say Jesus Christ. I mean whether you believe or not, the man suffered and died on a cross with the intent of saving humanity. That’s pretty awesome!

Now a few quick fun questions if we may? Do you think you are a good date?
Yeah, I tend to make the other person feel very at ease especially if it’s the first time meeting up.

Are you a brief man or a boxer kinda guy?
I wear both but am also known for going commando. (Shayne flashes his beautiful smile)

What do you listen to on your iPod?
Oh man, everything! Two of my fave bands are Deftones and Innerpartysystem, though.

Your favourite song/piece of music to play while running?
The track Greyhound by Swedish House Mafia really gets me going.

What kind of movies do you like?
Usually anything of the Sci/Fi and Horror genre but I’ll watch any film as long as it’s entertaining enough. I also enjoy Japanese foreign films.

What three words describe you best?
From what other people tell me they would have to be sweet, honest, but also a little weird at times.

One last question Shayne, where do you see yourself and what would you like to be doing in 10 years time?
Would definitely love to be acting in films!

Shayne, it has been a pleasure to interview you! Thank you for your time and for being a good sport. All the best for the future!
Thanks a lot, it was a pleasure (and Shayne treats us with another of his trademark smiles!)

Here is the interview in full

Stunning Men – Hi Paul, a warm welcome to Stunning Men and a big thank you for agreeing to answer our questions.
Could we start with talking a little about your background and childhood?
Paul Talbot – I grew up just north of Philly at the base of the Pocono Mountains. I was the middle child with an older sister and a younger brother and parents that were married for over 50 years.  We had very little growing up, but had lots of love in the family.

SM – Was modelling something you always wanted to do?
PT – No not at all; and it still seems strange at times that people want to shoot me.

SM – How did you become a model then?
PT – I started after being approached after my first bodybuilding contest when I was 42, and off it went from there.

SM – What do you enjoy the most in modelling?
PT – I love seeing all the diverse ways the photographers can make me look.  Sometime I’ll see the shots and think that is not my personality at all but the photographer was able to bring out a different side of me with clothes or lighting.

SM – How do you prepare before a photoshoot?
PT – I always stay fairly lean but about 3 weeks before a shoot I start drinking more water and trying to stay away from salt.  The 2 days prior to the shoot I cut off the water, no water for 36 hours, then eat a salty high carb meal late the night before the shoot.  Sometimes I spray tan but my skin is fairly dark to start.

SM – Have you done nude shoots? If so, how do you find being naked in front of the camera?
PT – Yes I have, with Mark Henderson in Dallas. Mark had me feel very comfortable and it was a fun shoot.  Since then I have done none, since those picture have little value to me personally.

SM – Do you have any tips to get things more comfortable during a nude shoot?
PT – First you have to have complete trust in the photographer, second lay out what you are willing to do, and not willing to do for the camera.  That way there is no question and the shoot will be more relaxed.

SM – Have you done any runway work?
PT – None, I’m too big! Most designers want a coat hanger to display their work. I would do underwear or sportswear, I have just never been picked, my age turns most folks off in the modelling business.

SM – What kind of exercises do you do to keep in top shape? Do you practise any sports?
PT – I lift free weights 5 days a week and do a 30 minute cardio session 3 to 4 times a week.

SM – What do you like wearing when you are not working as a model?
PT – I’m a jeans and T-shirt guy. I like to get dressed up for an event but those are rare.

SM – What do you think about the modelling industry?
PT – It’s tough. Lucky for me I have a good day job that pays the bills.  I have been told by agency owners that there is no market for someone like me due to age, and I think that is crazy but I haven’t been able to make them realise that us older guys don’t take ads seriously when the guys are 20; we can’t relate so we fly right on past them.

SM – Do you have any role models in the fashion world? People who inspired you to pursue a modelling career?
PT – Gregg Plittis the god of fitness modelling.

SM – Besides modelling, what gets your interest and what are your hobbies?
PT – I enjoy outdoor sports, skiing, hiking, and traveling, but I also like to lie on the beach and watch the sights walk past and drink a cold beer.

SM – What do you do to have fun and relax?
PT – Ride my bike, workout, hang out with friends, try new places and new experiences.

SM – What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
PT – Can’t say that here, but 99% of the time I am very stable and stay within the lines!

SM – Are you a brief man or a boxer kinda guy?
PT – Brief or none.  My butt is big enough, I don’t need to try and stuff boxers into my pants.

SM – Who are your favourite singers or musicians and what do like to listen to?
PT – I like top 40 stuff, fun relaxing music if I am just listening.  If out dancing more tribal or house music is good.

SM – We know that you have to watch what you eat; but do you have any guilty pleasures?
PT – I’m not a sweet tooth guy and I don’t drink or eat any milk products so that keeps me off the hook for a lot of things.  I do like to eat just plain crackers like wheat thins, or cheese nip and somehow the box always gets empty fast!

SM – If you weren’t modelling, what would you be doing?
PT – I would probably be in worst shape and just sitting around. Modelling keeps me motivated to stay on top of my game.

SM – Do you have any projects or photoshoots coming up?
PT – I have just done a shoot with Sebastian Barone and I am shooting with Kevin Hoover for a project he is working on.  Also being a guest host of a cooking show that highlights cooking health to grow your muscle and reduce fat; it should be fun!

SM – One last question Paul, where do you see yourself and what would you like to be doing in 10 years time?
PT – Hopefully everything will be the same, life is good.  The challenge is trying to maintain a youthful look over time.

SM – Thank you so much for taking part to our interview and for being such good sport.
PT – Thank you for asking me to be part of Stunning Men, it’s a true honour for me to be out there with all the top young guys you have featured.

SM – All the best for the future Paul.
PT – Thanks again for the chance to be on the site.

Stunning Men - Welcome to Stunning Men to you both. It is a great pleasure to finally feature you in our blog.

Abel Cruz – Thanks
Jorge Freire – Great to finally make it here

SM – Could we start by talking a little bit about where you are both from?
AC – I’m from Nicaragua I came here when I was 5.
JF – I also came here when I was 5 years old. I am originally from Havana Cuba.

SM – You have just been celebrating 14 years of life together. Our sincere congratulations! What’s your secret?
AC – (Abel laughs) Patience, compromising, and never going to bed angry.
JF – Amen!

SM – You have your own style and identity as photographers, but how much collaboration do you do if any?
AC – Depends on the project, Jorge may assist me on a project as a photo assistant, with lighting, make up and hair and vice versa.
JF – We work in conjunction to make sure all of our projects are a success.

SM – Your work has been admired by many for some years now. How did you become photographers? Is that something you always wanted to do?
AC – I actually was involved in theatre and after a fall out with a theatre company, a long period went by with me not doing anything creative, Jorge encouraged me to pursue photography and within the first few months I was getting published. It is great to have this as my creative outlet and I have met a lot of incredible people because of it.
JF – Yes, I started photography when I was a senior in high school. I quickly learned that it was my ticket to get close the hot boys. LOL Long story short I have been photographing them ever since.

SM – What did you do before you worked as photographers?
AC – I studied theatre and visual arts.
JF – Photography started out as a hobby for me, I did hair and makeup for years until one day someone asked me how much I charged for a headshot. That became the beginning to my photographic career.

SM – You have worked with many stunning models over the years. How do you manage to find such stunning guys over and over again?
AC – Word of mouth has been great for us. We treat all of our models with respect and as family. Some of our closest friends started out as our models. Also facebook, myspace, model mayhem have served their purpose in finding models.
JF – We get this question a lot and the answer is pretty simple, they find us.

SM – Sorry to be so predictable guys! JFitness photography Vs fashion photography? What do you think is the main differences between the two?
AC – I think all mediums are merging. Depends on the taste of the client / line what they consider fashion and fitness. Sometimes the two combine beautifully. I myself always try to bring some fashion in with my fitness models and vice versa with fashion models. Though the body types are different, if you got the right lighting and concept then the rest flows beautifully.
JF – So basically naked vs clothes (Jorge laughs and so do!)

SM – Do you have any role models in photography?
AC – We share the same role models David Vance, Bruce Weber, Herb Ritts ...
JF – (continuing)  ... Rick Day, Richard Gerst, and the iconic ads of Calvin Klein

SM – What do you enjoy the most in photography?
AC – I enjoy the whole process of creating, putting the looks together, fine tuning ideas with models and of course the shoot itself.
JF – I really love making people feel beautiful. There’s nothing more fulfilling than having them look at their image and say “Wow! Is that really me?

SM – What is your favourite location for a shoot?
AC – I hate doing the same thing over and over again. So I try to switch up as much as I can. I love outdoor locations for their versatility but I also enjoy the controlled environment of a studio.
JF – Studio for me.

SM - Do you have any projects or photoshoots coming up you would like to share?
AC – Top Secret (Abel laughs)
SM – And me who was counting on a big scoop! Ah! Ah!
JF – There’s always something in the works for us.

SM – If you weren’t photographers, what would you be doing?
AC – Acting
JF – Assisting a photographer (Jorge laughs)

SM – What do you do to have fun and relax? What are your interests and hobbies?
AC – (Abel laughs) Photography for me helps me relax and it’s really a lot of fun for me. If I could do this for the rest of my life then I am set.
JF – Collecting models and housing them.

SM - What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
AC – Well craziest situation would be photographing a model for a magazine at Key Biscayne. He and his lover found some foam thrown around in an abandoned shack and took them for padding to shape their bodies for drag and a homeless came out of nowhere an attacked us and tried to sell the foam and demanded that we put it back where we found it. It was crazy. The last thing he said to me was, “I’ll find you, your car is not hard to find” as we drove off. I drive a yellow Chevy tracker. So I’ve never been back to that spot ever since.
JF – Drive 6 hours from home to watch a merman swim in a tank. (Jorge laughs) Don’t ask.

SM – What kind of music do you listen to?
AC – Everything from Rock to County
JF – I’ve been listening to the same CDs since 1993 (More laughs from Jorge)

SM – Where do you see yourselves and what would you like to be doing in let’s say 10 years time?
AC – I would like to have our own full fledge photo studio business. Have a few published books under our belts and just enjoy our every day lives with all of our friends and family.
JF – Truth be told sometimes I can’t even imagine what I am going to be doing next week. I just want a life full of love, happiness and passion. Those things can’t be measured by monetary success, but by the friends and family who you chose to share your everyday with.

SM – Finally, what three words describe you best?
AC – Inventive, Determined, Kind
JF – Funny, Indecisive, Blessed

SM – Jorge and Abel, thank you so so much for taking part to this interview and for being such good sports. It was fun and a pleasure to talk with you both. All the best for the future and we are really looking forward to seeing new work from you both.
